Rooted Math Solutions
Grounded in meaning. Growing in confidence.
Helping K–12 schools root math teaching and learning in understanding, empowerment, and growth through customized consulting, intentional coaching, and targeted student tutoring.

Why “Rooted” Math?
Have you heard the term “crunchy”? It’s often used to describe a journey toward choosing clean, thoughtful ingredients and living intentionally with what goes into bodies and homes. Math education deserves that same care. How students learn, what they experience, and the instructional “ingredients” in their environment matter.
Rooted Math Solutions stands on the belief that nourishing a classroom with purposeful instruction plants the deep, resilient roots students need to grow.
When you walk into a highly effective, rooted math classroom, you don’t just see a teacher lecturing at the front. You see a dynamic environment built on three core tenets:
01
Cultivating Conceptual Understanding Before Procedural Speed
Math education is most effective when it builds a deep foundation before introducing shortcuts. While formulas and procedures have their place, they become powerful only when students understand the logic behind them. By utilizing visual models, manipulatives, and real-world context, learners discover why the math works. Once that conceptual foundation is secure, efficient procedures and formulas naturally follow, creating mathematical roots that last.
02
Discourse Over Silence
A thriving math classroom is filled with a productive buzz. While independent practice is valuable, deep learning happens when students work together to debate strategies, defend their logic, and critique reasoning. Actively talking through mathematical ideas allows learners to take true ownership of the concepts, because the student doing the talking is the student doing the learning.
03
A Culture of Productive Struggle
A strong math environment transforms mistakes from signs of failure into valuable data points for learning. By utilizing “low-floor, high-ceiling” tasks, instruction becomes accessible to every student while remaining challenging enough to spark deep thinking. This approach encourages learners to explore multiple strategies, embrace challenges, and confidently persevere through the natural confusion that leads to true breakthrough moments.

About the Consultant: Tara Woldt
My journey in math education has been driven by one goal: that every student finds confidence in math class. As a certified 6-12 mathematics teacher of 11 years and a CESA 6 Math Consultant of three years, I understand that math doesn’t just need to be taught; it needs to be rooted in sense-making.
My Experience
As a Consultant: I’ve led high-impact professional development and instructional coaching across multiple districts. My work focuses on bridging the gap between complex pedagogy and daily practice. I specialize in building classrooms that empower students as thinkers, utilizing high-yield instructional strategies.
As a Curriculum Creator: I’ve authored middle school intervention and elementary summer school math curricula, designed asynchronous e-Learning for teachers and leaders, and I have knowledge in major curricula including Bridges Mathematics and Illustrative Mathematics.
As a Teacher: My years in the classroom teaching 8th-grade math, algebra, geometry, and Tier II intervention taught me the value of a student-centered environment. I believe in using formative data to drive instruction and creating a culture where perseverance and conceptual understanding come first.
